Secure 2.0 made many important changes, however, one of the more impactful changes is the expansion of self-correction (Section 305). Previously, the IRS limited self-correction to certain plan failures. Other failures required expensive and time consuming filings with the IRS. Since few plans can avoid an occasional plan error, the expansion of self-correction is welcome news. In this Chapter meeting, we will explain the new correction procedures, including the recent guidance provided by the IRS (Notice 2023-43). Using case studies, we will illustrate how to apply the correction methods to resolve plan failures.
